Happy New Year from Marina

Happy New Year!

With that said, I wonder if your social network is a buzz with New Year’s resolutions as mine is? Did you make a resolution this year?

When I see my friends making choices to “lead a more balanced life” or “exercise more”, I wonder how they plan on being successful in these goals. How could you break these common resolutions down into day-to-day activities that are attainable?

Here are a couple of examples. To balance your life you may need to clean out a junk drawer, empty out your closet, organize your shoes, put away your filing, etc. Each small task can be done in an hour or a day and should be attainable. If your goal is to “exercise more” then break that down into smaller goals. Try, today I’m going to walk to work, today I’m going to park further away, today I’m going to take the stairs, today I’m going to check out my community gym (no pressure to go in), etc.

In one of my favourite books The Happiness Project, 2009, Gretchen Rubin broke her resolution of being happier down into 12 smaller goals she strived to accomplish in one year. At the end of the year she reached her goal of being happier. I bet she would not have been so successful had she just resolved to “be happier” without defining what happiness meant to her.

If you have decided to make a New Year’s resolution, keep your goals small and attainable and jot your ideas down into a journal. I believe a New Year’s resolution is a years worth of smaller resolutions that you need to keep track of in order to be successful.

Good luck.
